Championing Safe AI Use: Tarian’s AI Coordinator Receives Rising Star Award

Tarian’s AI Coordinator, Luke P, recently delivered a standout presentation on AI as an emerging threat at the Regional Cyber and Fraud Conference.

The event provided a fantastic opportunity to showcase the cutting‑edge work taking place across the southern Wales region, highlighting how rapidly AI is reshaping both the threat landscape and our policing response. Luke’s contribution helped raise awareness, strengthen capability, and spark important conversations with partners and practitioners from across the UK ROCU network.

Not only was Luke invited to present, he was also named the winner of the “Rising Star in Protect” Award at the conference’s evening dinner. In true dedication‑to‑the‑job fashion, he unfortunately missed the entire ceremony… because he was back in his room preparing for his presentation the following morning!

A very well‑earned award – even if he didn’t get to hear his own name being announced.

We caught up with Luke after the event and asked him for his top advice for using AI safely and effectively:

“For work, it’s essential to keep a ‘human in the loop’. Always check AI outputs, protect sensitive data, and make sure you understand how these tools fit into your existing processes.”

“Remember that AI predicts patterns and it doesn’t understand context or consequences. This means that the responsibility always sits with the human user. Critical thinking is key and AI should never be treated as a decision maker or a moral compass.”

“For personal use, the same principles apply. AI can be good for creativity and exploration, but you still need to stay alert to bias or misinformation, especially when children are using it and you’re taking on that observant parent role.”

“And most importantly, AI isn’t always truthful. It gets as much wrong as it does right!”

We’re incredibly proud of Luke’s achievement and grateful for his continued work in shaping our regional approach to AI, cyber risk, and protect/prepare capabilities as the only AI Coordinator in the UK ROCU network.

Well done, Luke!!
